An additional factor was the change in Egypt's foreign relations after the bronze age collapse while in the bronze age the pharaohs ruled a large area in the Levant and maintained peace with the Hittites on favorable to themselves terms, in later times the Assyrians, who emerged as a new power after the fall of the Hittite empire, were able to pillage or even temporarily conquer Egypt. Set had been demonized to some extent, and the Greeks interpreted him as evil, which may be one of the reasons he is viewed as an antagonistic force in later depictions.
